Hello again Reader
After watching Greg Benning’s 1% talk from the Older Athlete and Aging conference, my crew got together for a shared meal and to brainstorm the things we could do one percent better.
After a lot of post-it notes and laughs we classified them into four groups on two scales – Impact (high or low) and Easy or Hard to do.
One of my takeaways is that I need improved flexibility and yoga is my chosen method. Enter the wonderful Kara Wirt and her business, Yoga 4 Rowers.
Kara is a rower (that’s worth a ton of value alone) and she really understands the rowing and sculling movement and why we struggle to get into the positions we want to achieve. So far I have done two classes and I can already see the difference in my pelvic mobility. Could this be something your body needs too?
Kara has given Faster Masters a discount coupon for you below along with the full detail of the suite of video classes.
A sense of belonging
Caryn Davies is a much-lauded Olympian – and in this post she shows humility about her emotional reaction to her achievements.
Rowing is not just about the process goals or just about the winning goals. Belonging is one of the core achievements of masters rowing – it’s the reason many of us stick around and come back every year to the boathouse.
I’m proud of the work we have all done to make masters rowing so vibrant so everyone feels they belong.

The angle your oar spoon face presents to the water at the catch determines how easy it is to place into the water. Experiment with catch angles and boat set-up to change your catches.

Yoga Toolkit for Masters Rowers
Take a look at this new programme written just for us.
Kara Wirt is a coach, rower, coxswain and a yoga instructor, she’s build a reputation in the UK working with clubs and masters rowing camps (Chez Boileau) for helping improve our ability to get into rowing positions with ease.
On the instigation of Faster Masters Rowing, she’s designed a large collection of videos to suit what we need as masters. So set up your home yoga studio and let’s go!
Getting started workshop
Especially for masters, Kara has build a workshop focused on the underpinnings of rowing/sculling technique and ways to use yoga to enable us to row well. Starting with core and moving into the hip hinge, and the catch and drive phase, Kara guides us towards the postures which will improve our rowing movements.
Also in the collection are pre and post workout stretches (7 and 10 minutes), Kara added morning and evening mobility (15 minutes) and a full body class (30 minutes).
Her clear explanations and careful demonstration of each technique make these super-easy to follow even if you’ve never done yoga before.

Some days do you feel like you’re 32 again and other days you feel your chronological age? This happens frequently to me.
Why is this?
There are many reasons why we feel different from one day to the next, from a poor night’s sleep, recovering from rowing workouts, to life stress.
Altered cellular communication refers to changes in the ways cells interact and communicate with each other. When we get older, many substances start to circulate in our body that accelerate aging. These are specific proteins, hormones, peptides and metabolic substances.
During aging, the environment our cells live in changes: it becomes pro-inflammatory, pro-aging, and damaging. This makes our cells age faster, leading to a vicious cycle, as damaged, aged cells secrete harmful substances that damage healthy cells.
Also, during aging, we see a decline in circulation of substances that protect our cells or that keep our cells in a good condition.
The first insights regarding the importance of this extracellular milieu came from “heterochronic parabiosis” experiments, in which an old and a young mouse were sewn together, joining their blood circulatory systems, so that young blood flowed through the arteries of the old mouse and vice versa.

Boathouse Chat for the Weekend
Today’s C2 WOD is based on the calorie unit of measure. I don’t ever use this (I spend most workouts on wattage and/or 500m splits). How are rowers using the calorie units to improve rowing? I’d love to – intelligently – include these workouts into my routine.
