Rose wanted to talk about steering down a buoy line while rowing in the dark. We had a good chat – she’d booked herself in for a 20 minute Rowing Concierge meeting.
Regular readers will know that I talk often about investing in your rowing education and how being a good student of the sport is essential for refining your skills and experience. When a situation arises and you want to learn more or get another perspective, please ask us. We may be able to help or guide you towards useful resources.
I’ve been keeping notes online for years on rowing topics – I used to use Delicious, then it closed and I got Evernote and have recently switched to Google Keep. It allows me to tag and categorise as well as search back over a dozen years of saved links. I can easily find the right book to recommend – for Rose it was Coaching the Coxswain.
I designed the Rowing Concierge service so that you can check in to ask specific, personal questions. Frequently these are hard-to-find answers, or they’re very nuanced in your unique situation. Sometimes these questions are best answered from personal experience, rather than book learning. The link is always in the footer of this email – do bookmark it for future reference.
I was hoping I could get my partner a year’s membership to Faster Masters as a Christmas gift
You are right we don’t specifically have memberships set up as gifts. However, I have a suggestion.
Buy the program with a user name which is recognizably your partner’s, but use your email address so you get the purchase confirmation message. When you’ve given it to them, they can change the email address in the profile settings (but the user name cannot be changed later).
Wishing you all the very best for your holiday celebrations.
Rebecca
This week’s podcast
Hear how people deal with an illness but keep up their rowing. Overall advice is to “do what you can”.
When you learn just one useful thing from our podcast, become a supporter from $1 per month. This helps cover overheads and enables us to continue our work to improve masters rowing around the world.
Christmas wishes to all
Several Faster Masters members have sent me photos and seasonal messages this week. I love it – do please share your Christmas dress-up rowing pictures. These both came from members in Northern Ireland.
Wishing you a great Christmas and New Year. Keep up the good work. The Faster Masters Rowing site is just great.
In Belfast on the River Lagan we had The Festive HoR last Saturday where besides rowing over 2800M we had to dress up.
Attached is a photo of The Lady Victoria Boat Club Masters 8 rowing H (oldest member 81).
As you can see from the facial expressions rowing is not all fun!
All the best for 2025.
Ricky
A day later I got this from another Northern Irish member, Barry Dowling whose crew raced the same event.
Thought you’d like this one. Our MM8 rowing up to the start of the Lagan Festive Head of the River (iconic Harland & Wolf cranes in the background). We won best dressed men’s crew of the day & fastest Masters 8. Not easy racing in a dog suit!!!
Boathouse Chat for the Weekend
Anyone have advice please on how to avoid scraping my right hand knuckles when sculling? Nails are very short. I try to relax my grip. Tried tape over my knuckles but still produces burns. Tried covering my left fingers but still burn my knuckles! I look like a boxer. That’s not my sport!
