Why the crew went 20 seconds slower

Since the 80s, Concept2 have made the world’s most popular rowing. The only problem? They haven’t progressed to the Peloton model of a home workout with screens, internet connectivity, and a library of on-demand workouts. MyRow turns a C2 rower into a connect to fitness exercise machine.

Hello again Reader

We’ve got two live webinars next week – the Coach Mastermind monthly zoom and the Functional Strength and Movement webinar for Masters in age groups F, G, H and above. Our speaker is David Frost which many of you will know from his book, Kaboomer.

David is certain that not enough masters know the importance of regularly maintaining our functional strength to do “the activities of daily life”. For us rowers, those daily things include lifting a boat above head height, carrying a coach boat, or loading a trailer.

David adds that most masters get injured while away from the boathouse and off the water, and that could be loading the dishwasher!

Ways to stay injury free, maintaining balance and avoiding lower back problems are the heart of this webinar. It will be recorded.

Find your ideal race rate

What is the “ideal” stroke rate for a head race? It depends – but I know whatever skill level you are at, it’s hard, aggressive and as powerful as you can sustain.

Let me illustrate this with an anecdote.

While coxing a men’s eight, they had two 1k races in one day. The coxswain was new to the crew and in the pre-race chat, he asked them about a race plan. They discussed what they’d done in practice and off they went. The coxswain made calls through the race which pushed the crew hard; and were aligned to the discussed plan. They finished well.

In the second race the crew had another discussion beforehand. They wanted a change to the plan. Choosing to go “long and strong” at a lower stroke rate than before because it felt better.

The result? They were 20 seconds slower over 1k.

There is a truism that racing isn’t comfortable. You cannot race hard without pushing your boundaries of power, rate and relaxation. This causes discomfort. It doesn’t feel “nice”.

This week, focus on regularity of going to bed times and see if this affects your perception of how rested you are in the morning.
