Three weeks to learn how to row and scull with square blades
This might seem like a massively tough skill to learn – yet the benefits are huge.
This self-directed 3 episode series will teach you the base skills from which you will be able to learn square blade rowing.
Each week you get – one in depth instructional video by Marlene Royle and Rebecca Caroe plus a series of in-boat drills for you to practice. Each week’s learning builds on the prior week to enable you to move your skills up towards full square blade sculling and rowing.
You don’t need to have a single scull, you can practice all the practical lessons in any rowing or sculling boat.
This course is designed for beginner and intermediate masters rowers who want to advance their skill.
Benefits of square blade technique
One of the definitive skills in rowing and sculling
- stabilise the boat on the recovery
- how to keep the oar shafts at an even level off the water
- learn the timing of when to enter and when to exit without having too much tension on the handle.
Why is it a challenging drill?
- balance and stability on the recovery means you have to learn how to stabilise the boat
- the timing of keeping the handle in motion without a lot of tension
- how to lightly place blade with quickness, allow the blade to do its work without getting in its way, and how to release at the correct time.
When you’re allowed to feather “a mere convenience” you can feather the blade out, you can feather under water both of which mask the correct release timing.
This course will teach you how to practice learning to row square blades. And yes, it takes time and practice – yet the benefits are really worthwhile.
