It's what it changes

Why we train the way we do as masters rowers, and whether it's the most effective way led by Alex Wolf.

Most of Us Never Actually Chose Our Training

Think for a second about how you train. The intervals, the steady miles, the gym work, the stretching before you get on the water. Now ask where it all came from.

For most masters rowers, the honest answer is that we inherited it. We carried it over from school, or university, or the last squad we rowed in, or a plan someone handed us years ago, and we've repeated it ever since. Rarely do we stop to ask whether it still fits the rower we are now, or the rowing we actually want to do.

Here's what's worth noticing: a session isn't valuable because it's hard, or familiar, or because a fast rower once swore by it. It's valuable because of what it changes in your boat. Start judging your training by that single measure, and a surprising amount of what you've always done starts to look optional.

That's the invitation in this session, to look again.
