Join Rebecca on Camp during April

Hello again Reader

It’s February – shortest month but often a tough one when you’re training in the northern winter. Bringing your focus to future fun and challenges can be a nice way to motivate yourself.

I get asked if Faster Masters Rowing runs rowing camps – we don’t. But we do guest coach and so I’m delighted to announce that I’ll be at the US Rowing Masters camp from 1-4 April 2024. More details below.

Today we are celebrating some athlete results from our Erg Intensive group – a race win (virtual Head of the Hooch) and improvements in 2k scores of 3 seconds and 6 seconds. I’m very proud of the group’s achievements.

A fulfilled older athlete’s life

Society has an obsession with youth, which seems to have lead to a fear of getting older (FOGO).

“It’s important to have as much fun as possible while we’re here”

Jeff Weiss of Age of Majority surveyed his members about what we fear most and found that it is FOGO. He asked them

Which are you more afraid of – getting older or dying?

While most Revolution55 members thought dying was a bigger fear for older adults (60%), we also heard that they thought getting older was a bigger fear for younger adults (58%).

What does society fear most about aging?

After being asked to select three possible fears from a list of common age-related fears, five fears stood out.

  • Fear of cognitive decline (60%)
  • Fear of losing independence (56%)
  • Fear of disease or chronic illness (39%)
  • Fear of losing mobility (35%)
  • Fear of getting closer to death (34%)

It seems to us that people generally are more afraid of being limited, or of losing themselves or pieces of themselves than they are of looking older, being stereotyped, or even dying.

So let’s get back out on the water, onto the indoor rower and plan some regattas or rowing holidays.

Time to enjoy ourselves!

What percentage of the rowing stroke is legs, back and arms? We discuss the sequential and simultaneous stroke sequence and a test to find out how much each body part contributes to your power phase in rowing and sculling. Click the image to watch.

Boathouse Chat for the Weekend

I am helping to draft a survey for our Masters team and naturally have no desire to reinvent the wheel (much less a survey). Have any of you/your clubs created a survey that you felt was comprehensive and provided good data once compiled…and that you’d be willing to share?!

Join the group and take part in the discussion.

Come on camp

A masters rowing camp is a load of fun – a trip, meeting new people and getting coached by experts.

Rebecca has been asked to join the US Rowing Masters Camp in April.

60 athlete places and 8-10 coach places are available; the training venue is top notch.

U.S.Rowing’s Inaugural Masters Rowing Camp – Chula Vista, California April 1-4, 2024

Immerse yourself in a training experience on the very waterway that has shaped numerous US Team athletes.

Engage in a holistic environment where sleep, dining, and sport converge – the same space where Olympians have diligently prepared for the ultimate test. Our fully buoyed 3000-meter 6 lane course eagerly awaits your arrival.

Under the direction of Lesleh Wright, our accomplished coaching staff includes Al Morrow (Canadian Olympic Coach), Volker Nolte (Canadian Olympic Coach), Lindsay Dare Shoop (US World and Olympic Champion) and Cassandra Cunningham (National Team Athlete, World Silver Medalist and Junior National Team Coach). Our team is committed to furthering your rowing education and setting you up for the upcoming season.

The camp is tailored to applications with intermediate or higher rowing proficiency.

Ensure your participation by registering through this link on RegattaCentral with a registration fee of US$895 per person (excludes housing, meals and transportation).

Kicking off at noon on Monday April 1 and concluding at 10:00am on Thursday, April 4th to allow for easy transition to San Diego for the annual Crew Classic Regatta which begins Friday, April 5th.

For those interested in an “on-site accommodation” at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center, reach out to [email protected] for detailed information on daily rates for rooms inclusive of 3 meals.

Seize the opportunity, as camp slots are limited.

Lastly, for any Masters Team that would like to send their Coach along for a Ride-Along opportunity, the camp in Chula Vista is a great opportunity. Led by Cam Kiosoglous, we are creating a mentoring/educational program to allow 8-10 coaches to observe the incredible coaches attending, and then turn that into learning. Details can be found HERE.

Feedback from the group

Repeating each workout is helpful. I’m able to do better each time I repeat that workout.

The evaluation tools give me a better idea of what I should be targeting.
