Nutrition Intensive: Healthful weight loss for athletes.

In this four week group class, Elizabeth will guide you towards appropriate ways to adjust your rowing lifestyle. She has shared the class agenda for the first two weeks.

Class 1: Weight Loss Fundamentals

Class 2: Creating a Sustainable, Balanced Diet

The full agenda for these classes is in the course description – click the button below.

Each class will be held at 3.30 pm EST on Thursdays [they will be recorded]. The four group class dates are 30th January, 6th February, 13th February, 20th February 2025.

You get Q&A access to Elizabeth throughout and a supportive group of cheerleaders alongside you on the journey.

This week’s podcast

Of the four key concepts that underpin skilful rowing and sculling, weight in the hand is the most challenging. Rebecca explains how it’s useful and showcases a drill to learn for yourself. Click on the picture to watch.

Adapting rowing rigging for masters physiology

Masters rowers fundamentally are no different from any other age group. However, we know that our strength and flexibility changes as we age and so it is helpful to re-assess rigging and boat set up regularly for masters training groups. Knowing how to adapt rowing rigging for masters is explained here along with some common problems and how to fix them with rigging adjustments.

Comfort in the Rowing Boat

The goal of rowing and sculling boat rigging for masters is twofold:

  1. Be able to move through the stroke cycle
  2. Be comfortable while doing it

Let’s start by reviewing the parts of a rowing boat which are capable of adjustment and the degree of difficulty involved in changing each.

  • Oar length easy to change
  • Oar inboard easy to change
  • Oar handle size moderately difficult to change
  • Seat height easy to change
  • Slide / track position moderately difficult to change
  • Foot Stretcher position easy to change
  • Shoe height moderately difficult to change
  • Foot stretcher angle / rake hard to change
  • Rigger pin position (span / spread) hard to change
  • Rigger pin pitch (fore/aft and lateral) hard to change
  • Oarlock height easy to change

The assessment of easy / moderate / hard is based on the amount of time, tools and skill needed to make a change….. [click button to read more].

Boathouse Chat for the Weekend

We are a modest Rowing Club looking for advice, hints, tricks, ideas to try to improve the conditions at our disembarkation point. Our ramp, made of stone, is constantly invaded by greenery and although we clean it with a Karcher every fortnight and more so in these winter months, we would like to find a lasting solution to the problem. Thanks in advance everyone.

Sit Bone Basics

Are you sitting comfortably? A rowing boat seat is designed to enable you to tilt your pelvis forwards and backwards during the rowing stroke. The holes in the seat top enable you to stay sitting in one place and not slide off during the stroke.

How to locate your “sit bones” and find if they’re moving correctly.

Watch Marlene Royle explain how to work out if you are sitting in a neutral position, how to check your pelvic angle is correct when you lean back and forwards and two stretches for pelvic mobility.
