Get the boat level

Hello again Reader

Are catches your fave or your nemesis? There’s a brilliant video to watch from World Rowing at the Luzern regatta. The LM2x Italians are duking it out against the Swiss and the Irish. What I noticed is the stark contrast in their styles.

One is fluid and the oars seem to glide into the water and the other creates a strong lock-on at the placement which you can see in the rowers’ shoulder muscles.

Our Coach Mastermind group is discussing this and how to coach different ways of placing the oar in the June event (it is recorded).

For those who self-coach, you may like to join our monthly Coach newsletter in which these topics are discussed and other resources which you can put into practice too. It’s free to join – click below and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Set yourself a small challenge for this rowing week.

Boathouse Chat for the Weekend

I recently heard about an ointment to apply to your hands before rowing. I found Rip Stopper Balm on Amazon. Can anybody recommend it or have a product they love? TIA

Mistakes happen – that’s not what matters

I remember watching Henley Womens Regatta and seeing the young Rebecca Romero racing her 1x. Early in the race she lurched sideways with a near-crab but she recovered and got back onto her pattern, continuing to win the event later in the weekend.

When watching, I remarked that this looked like a near-capsize. I wasn’t at the time a confident sculler – I could only sweep. My companion replied with a question. If that had been a sweep crew and I was the athlete who’d had a lurch, would I have known what to do? How would I have felt?

I replied that I knew how to recover and would have been confident that I wouldn’t fall in. So, they replied, why would it be any different in a sculling boat?

Of course, this revealed my fear of capsizing in a single – but it does serve to illustrate how experience can help you when you’ve made a mis-stroke.

The key is not to worry about the bad stroke. That happened, it’s not going away. What matters is how fast you can get back to a level boat and your preferred stroke pattern of rowing or sculling.

Next time you’re out on the water, count the strokes and see how fast you can get back onto an even keel.
