Is agism rife in rowing clubs?

Hello again Reader

I wrote in the December 22nd newsletter about the symptoms of clubs not getting the balance of masters vs other club members right. And received this reply from a reader.

“There’s a lot of positive stuff going on for Masters at my club, but also some of the negatives you mention. I have only been in the club 20-something years, and I no longer have the energy to try to change things. I am not writing to whine, though, but to thank you for all the work you put into Faster Masters.

Maybe when I retire in a few years and have time to train more regularly and at times when the river isn’t churned up by coaching launches I may do more training. I wanted to let you know that your efforts are much appreciated. If you’re ever in our area, there will always be a boat for you to row.”

It saddens me to read that masters no longer have the energy to effect change. We deserve equal treatment and equality of access to equipment, coaching, water time and the attention of the club committee. As the World Health Organisation research found one in every two people held moderately or highly ageist attitudes. That’s from a survey of over 83,000 people in 57 countries.

Ageism is widespread.

This affects us all. And many masters are on rowing club committees and boards. We can challenge prejudice and set structures up to improve rowing for masters athletes within the domains where we have influence.

“Ageism is the last acceptable prejudice”. It’s got to stop.

Below is a link to an article which may help you introduce more balance into your rowing club’s operations.

Organising a club

I got this message from a master’s rower which was very telling. Equal treatment in the eyes of the club as a whole speaks volumes. And it goes to the heart of my opening remarks in the December 22 Newsletter.

“Our masters squad are having a bit of a rethink around our operational requirements and training principles as a group. Have you got access to any other clubs “rules of engagement” that we might be able to have a look at? We don’t need to reinvent the wheel – just keen not to miss anything and ensure we have equal treatment in the eyes of the Club as a whole.”

I was able to suggest some things for the group to work on.

If this is an issue for your masters rowing group, have a read of the resources I shared. Masters Equal Treatment article.
