Hello again Reader You’ve probably heard of the concept of an “athlete pathway”. It’s the process by which federations organise talent identification and coaching to develop athletes towards high performance and the Olympic Games. Much of national sport is organised around this pathway. Funding is allocated to different layers of achievement, coaching education is structured to advance athletes to the next stage, erg score targets and national speed order trials are organised. There is no pathway for masters rowing. At best, a masters ‘pathway’ is perceived as slow decline with age. Masters need a pathwayThe huge diversity of masters rowers means that there are many ways into the sport, many ways to participate and many ways to progress. Most athletes want to mark progress and for those who compete, age group racing disadvantages those who are new to the sport. A masters pathway framework will give clarity for clubs, regattas and the athlete participants. The article below shares ideas on how to do this. We can fix this. Row faster this year, Rebecca P.S. Edit: asked & answered, thanks, plus a bonus Boat Race story… How to make our pathwayAt our recent Older Athlete and Aging conference, Rebecca presented a paper on ways to improve masters rowing using ‘systems thinking’. There are many areas where this process helps troubleshoot and problem-solve the issues facing masters. When talking to masters, Rebecca observes “The problems, blockages and issues we face are common. Yet the solutions must be individual and localised.” This has driven the advocacy work which Faster Masters Rowing leads when speaking to Federations, Clubs and Regattas in order to improve the sport for masters. Here are Rebecca’s slides for you to download and share.
