Hello again Reader
There are three programs this month – 1k for those racing in September. A final training block focused on race rates and speed work and the usual taper week. Count back from your race day to start your taper.
The two long distance training programs are 5k for Head of the Charles and 5k for those racing long distance races in October or November.
In both we step up the intensity and work on ratings you will be using in the race.
Two drills are included in the program – reverse pick drill and legs only rowing drill. Both have a video explainer. These, along with the Wednesday power strokes, will help you to strengthen the effectiveness of your leg drive this month.
Most head races are not on straight courses. Develop your steering skills during your practices as well. It may help you in training to name key markers (bridges, corners) which are in your main event.
This month we have two practice race distance trials. If you are able to enter a race this month you can exchange it for one of the trials. However, if your big event is in November, you may choose to only do one of the race trails (we will do more during October).
Your performance module article is about active isolated stretching – this is particularly effective because it works both the muscle you want to stretch and its opposite (antagonist) muscle. Sitting well is the rowing lifestyle article and is a quiet challenge to all of us to review our posture in the rest of our non-rowing lives.
For the technique article we set out a controversial viewpoint about the catch and what it feels like and how to make it happen. When you test yourself doing the catch, it may make you reappraise your approach to this part of the stroke. And our bonus is a compilation of humorous boat names compiled from around the world. What does “Pony Off A Lemon” mean?
Time to refocus back onto your training this month. Try to build consistency and do all the 3 core sessions every week. This is your investment in the next training block – it will pay off.
