She aligns the learning to scull process with balance – both in her life and in her boat.
Getting high profile people to talk about their rowing is great for our sport – have you seen any others? I found a video about a bunch of ex-rugby players in New Zealand, including an All Black, taking up eights rowing. The humour is quirky!
Boat phone mounts
Ellen Braun replied after last week’s newsletter where I mentioned in-boat mounts for phones.
About boat mounts for smartphones…there are options that are commercially available and easily adapted to rowing needs. Many were developed for cycling and motor sports, so they are pretty tough as well. Here’s an example of a three-part assembly (base, arm, phone holder) that works well in a 1x, attaching on the foot-stretcher using an available bolt hole.
Of course, searches of photography gear, especially gear for GoPro cameras, will give additional options for bases that could work for riggers and other mounting positions.
I’m always grateful for feedback from readers. Keep it coming!

Protecting boats on the rack from damage is a perennial challenge in boat houses – introducing the pool noodle defence.
There are 2 designs
Cover the top nut and backstay
Cover the whole of the gate.
Take a foam pool noodle and cut to length – about 6 cm longer than your gate total length along the top for the whole gate design; and the length of the gate for the backstay design.
Slit the length of the noodle so you can open it down the long side.
Using electrical or gaffer tape, wrap around one end to close the slit.
If you are using the backstay / top nut version add the tape after sliding the noodle over the backstay – this will stay permanently on the boat. Just slide it off the gate and down the backstay while you are rowing; slide it back before racking the boat.
Optional – cut out circles in the foam around the slit to act as guides for placement over the top nut and swing-arm nut of the gate.
The backstay option does not work with C-Cup gates and you need to have a back stay rigger.
Bingo – the defense you’ve been waiting for.
The author does not warrant defensive properties when defective athletes fail to install the noodles on their boat!

Hello again Reader
Across the world there are events at different times of year. When Marlene and I started this business we researched the major events for masters rowers in English-speaking countries. We designed the training programmes to cater for the majority using our standard training plans. Sometimes, these don’t exactly align with races you want to do.
We got this question from Michael
Do you by any chance have a training program for a single sculler taking part in a 16km head race?…
