Why are masters clubs organised this way?

Hello again Reader

Rowing is a sport for life – nobody knows this better than us masters. We have all come to the sport at varying ages, life stages and we take part in the way that makes best sense to us. As Marlene is fond of saying, masters rowing is

Rowing with adaptations

Today I want you to join me in celebrating a very special crew that I had the honour of commentating (announcing) at the Head of the Charles. Not only were they the very last crew up the historic race course for 2023, they were also the oldest.

Watch three minutes of me rhapsodising about them on the live stream. And huge thanks to Catherine Saarela, their coach, who told me all about them (so I looked well-informed).

Masters-friendly clubs

What would make your club more masters-friendly? That’s not just about being welcoming and having a group to row with. There are a lot of organisational and structural impediments to broadening masters participation in rowing.

It’s an evolving landscape. Agism is real but our real fight is with entrenched attitudes ‘because we’ve always done it this way’.

Like annual club membership dues. Golf clubs allow ‘pay-to-play’ but rowing clubs don’t. Why is that?

And how can masters get the club to buy masters-suitable equipment? My club discards one or two boats a year – usually a 90kg hull…. most of our members are less than 80kg. Waiting around for hand-me-down equipment is a mug’s game. My speech at the upcoming webinar is on Systems Thinking for Rowing Clubs.

Row faster this year,

Rebecca

Boathouse Chat for the Weekend

Hello, we are a group of masters women from York City Rowing Club, UK looking for recommendations for lesser known regattas or head races in Europe in 2024. Three of our group become Masters F next year and we are planning a year of rowing-related celebrations! The events need to be easily accessible from the UK and we would need to hire boats. Happy to join in and do composite crews. Recommendations appreciated!

What did The Romans (Faster Masters) ever do for me?

Hello again Reader
Advocacy or speaking up for masters rowing is one of the goals for Faster Masters Rowing. As a business, we benefit when there are more masters in the sport and also when there are more organisations catering for masters such as clubs, regattas and rowing businesses.
Since we started in April 2019, masters rowing has grown significantly in participation headcount. Starting a podcast and weekly newsletter to communicate on topics of interest means we now have a large global…

Want a better rowing group? Here’s how

Hello again Reader
Things that contribute to a robust rowing group over time can be encapsulated in Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Belonging and esteem are part of the list he identified in 1943.
Masters should have a range of ways to contribute to the overall club goals. Another word for esteem is ‘status’ and the way your club group assigns status is a core underpinning of its success. We masters are not all racing demons – young people gain rowing status by winning races; masters…

The masters rowing pathway

Hello again Reader
You’ve probably heard of the concept of an “athlete pathway”. It’s the process by which federations organise talent identification and coaching to develop athletes towards high performance and the Olympic Games.
Much of national sport is organised around this pathway. Funding is allocated to different layers of achievement, coaching education is structured to advance athletes to the next stage, erg score targets and national speed order trials are organised.
There is no…
